What Is Ekoru?
Ekoru’s new search engine is now live! Founders and married couple, Ati Bakush and Alison Lee, wanted to create a new platform that had the same features and abilities as a traditional search engine with the added benefit of giving back to the environment.
For 20 years, Bakush specialized in developing software for internet service providers and telecommunications. Previously, Lee built a career focused on communications including her role as Marketing Manager for Nike. After becoming inspired to take the plunge into entrepreneurship, the couple decided to combine their fields of technology and marketing to create Ekoru — a platform that gives back.
With every search, Ekoru uses hydroelectricity to power its servers. Ekoru has partnered with Big Blue Ocean Cleanup as well as Operation Posidonia for their ocean cleanup projects.
Ocean Conservation
As part of its dedication to the ocean, Ekoru puts its money where its mouth is. The ocean has thousands of tons of pollution in it — ocean cleanups on several different levels are necessary to take out and reduce this waste. To support these types of projects, Ekoru's founders have stated that 60% of revenue will go to its partners, Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and Operation Posidonia.
As the name implies, Big Blue Ocean Cleanup is an international nonprofit that focuses on cleaning the oceans. Alongside its waste removal efforts, members of this organization also strive to protect marine wildlife and ecosystems as well as provide education for those who wish to help.
Operation Posidonia is a restorative organization in its efforts. While Big Blue Ocean Cleanup seeks to remove harmful substances from the oceans, Operation Posidonia replants seagrass along the ocean floor. Seagrass offers habitats for sea life, creates new ecosystems and sequesters carbon in the ocean, which contributes to cutting global CO2 emissions and limiting the effects of global warming.
With over half of Ekoru's revenue going towards these types of organizations, the search engine contributes to different aspects of conservation. Their approach to conservation is both blue and green: one organization seeks to remove the toxicity of waste in the seas, the other is restoring the green parts of it. These efforts add up and the message is clear, you are then giving back as soon as you hit the search button.
Hydroelectric Power
Cleaning the oceans is only the first step in Ekoru’s conservation efforts. The next is on the use of hydroelectric power. Though many organizations and businesses use fossil fuels or other non-renewable energies to provide electricity, Ekoru focuses on using energy that already exists!
Energy efficiency is a global necessity. Many people start with energy efficiency in their homes and expand outwards into businesses and societal living. With Ekoru, the creators understood this need and began the project with as much energy efficiency as possible.
Hydroelectric power uses the current of rivers to generate electricity. Since the current is naturally occurring and theoretically renewable, this method of using power is considered environmentally-friendly. These types of plants operate without the need for dams or reservoirs too, which prevents negative consequences for surrounding habitats and water supplies. As Ekoru uses hydroelectric power for its servers, it again ensures that each of your searches is environmentally-friendly.
Ekoru and the Environment
Besides Ekoru’s direct contributions to protecting our oceans, it also supports important environmental causes like promoting animal welfare, reforestation and preventing climate change. When you use Ekoru, you're not only giving back to the Earth, you're also reducing your own carbon footprint by reducing your negative impacts and increasing your contributions.
